Drafting & Publishing Your ActionPath

Drafting and editing an ActionPath before publishing

Written by Eamonn Mannion

Every ActionPath has two states: a private Draft that only you can see, and a Published version that your clients see when you share access. This separation lets you refine your plan without exposing mid-edit work — changes only become visible to clients when you choose to publish them.

This article covers how those two states work, what happens when you publish or discard changes, and how clients are notified. For guidance on building the plan itself — selecting strategies, setting targets, and reviewing projected FHR impact — see How to Use ActionPath: A Step-by-Step Guide.

The Two States: Draft and Published

Your ActionPath sits under My Financial Health → ActionPath, where two tabs appear:

  • Draft (Editable) — your private working copy. Anything you change here stays hidden from clients until you publish.

  • Published — the version your clients see. It shows the Financial Period, the Published on date, and how many companies currently have access.

When you edit a published ActionPath, the system automatically creates a Draft from the published content. The Published version remains untouched — and remains what your clients see — until you publish your changes.

How to Tell You Have Unpublished Changes

Once you edit an existing plan, the Draft (Editable) tab displays two indicators:

  • A Draft chip on the tab

  • An Unpublished Changes chip on the plan itself

An info banner also appears reminding you that clients will continue to see the previously published version until you publish your updates. From this banner, a View Published Version link lets you check what your clients are currently seeing without leaving the Draft.

Publishing Your Changes

When your Draft is ready to share, open the Publish dropdown at the top of the plan. You will see two options:

  • Publish Changes — promote the Draft to the live Published version

  • Discard Changes — abandon the Draft and revert to the last Published version

Selecting Publish Changes opens the Publish ActionPath Changes dialog, which asks for two pieces of information:

Field

Required?

Notes

ActionPath Name

Yes

A descriptive name for this version — for example, "Debt Reduction Plan – John Smith". The Publish ActionPath button stays inactive until this field is filled in.

Plan Summary

No

A short summary of your plan. If provided, it is visible to clients once the version is published.

Confirm with Publish ActionPath. A success banner confirms the changes have been published, and the view switches to the Published tab showing the newly named version.

What Publishing Replaces

Publishing replaces the current Published version entirely. There is no version history — previous Published versions are not retained. Once you publish, the plan your clients see is the plan you just published.

Discarding Draft Changes

If you decide not to move forward with your edits, use Publish → Discard Changes. This abandons the Draft and reverts you to the last Published version. Discarding does not affect what your clients see, because clients only ever see the Published version.

Client Visibility and Notifications

  • Clients only ever see the Published version. Drafts, unpublished edits, and any content on the Draft (Editable) tab are never exposed to clients at any point.

  • When you publish, every client that currently has access is notified that an updated version is available.

  • If no client has access at the time you publish, no notification is sent.

Access to your ActionPath is managed separately, via ActionPath Access on the Published tab or from the Homepage.

Draft Rules to Know

  • One Draft per Financial Period. You cannot have multiple Drafts open at the same time for the same period.

  • Drafts do not expire. You can leave a Draft in progress indefinitely.

  • No reminders are sent. The Unpublished Changes chip is your only in-app signal that a Draft has changes waiting to publish.
